Poland Pt3 - Morskie Oko

As you can see we are seriously staggering the posts.  There was simply too much goodness that had to be shared from Poland and the delay between posts is not due to laziness, but simply settling into the busy London life.  We are both lucky enough to be working full time, Shelley teaching all over London to little British brats and I'm busy trekking all over London as a freelance photographer.  Both of us are extremely grateful and blessed to have landed sweet jobs so early in the piece!

Morskie Oko - a mountain lake in the snowy, alpine wonderland on the southern border where Poland meets Slovakia. The early morning sky was taunting us with moments of blue sky which gradually parted like Moses and the Red Sea. This trip was bound to turn on the dazzling sights for us after 3 days of thick cloud, rain and heavy snow.

Situated 1405m above sea level, we geared up with our snow threads, thermals, hiking boots and started to ascend this place of marvel. Every view seemed to get more beautiful with each bend and corner we turned.  Each one being more breath taking than the other and just when we thought it couldn't get any more beautiful, it did... again and again.  As we ascended higher and higher the snow became deeper, fluffier and fresher from the dump of snow the previous night.

After 2hrs of leg grinding, which seemed to get harder and harder, we made it to our destination.  An old 1805 polish building, established overlooking the breath taking, frozen lake covered in snow. The cafe/bar inside prepared the necessary essential items for us to consume so we could make the journey home.  Us boys downed a nice cold pint of beer while the girls took a more responsible approach and had water followed by an authentic polish apple strudle and our own polish cheese and meat platter.

After refuelling and resetting the internal thermostate, we geared up and explored the icy lake and added to the plethora of images we had already captured during our ascent, and then began the descent.  We had walked about 15min when we approached the traditional polish snow transport system...horse and sled, and decided to indulge and give our weary legs a break.

We jumped on board, snuggled up close and were covered with real sheep skins to keep us warm for the journey down.  This was well worth the small amount of zloty (polish currency) to reward our weary legs, even if we did get to the car park with horse hair all over us!

Once we arrived back to the car park we decided to head back to base camp via slovakia, which was a 20m detour.  You read right. It's not a typo... A 20 meter detour, literally.  We turned right onto a bridge and we were in Slovakia. Took a few quick snaps to prove that we had been there then crossed back over the boarder and headed home back to our log cabin in Zakopane.

A day well worth the energy expelled and highly recommended to anyone wanting to explore this small paradise.
